The San Augustine County Historical Foundation, established in the early 1960s, is a non-profit organization interested in preserving and restoring the county history.

With the assistance of two foundations, San Augustine's public records dating back to the 1830s have been preserved.

A computer indexing system has been developed, making the contents of these records easily and quickly available to the public for the first time. Many of the records now available for search can not otherwise be examined due to the age and deterioration of the paper. The early records simply could not be handled without destroying them.

The town of San Augustine was in the process of development as early as 1830, and formally recognized by the Mexican government in 1834. At this time an ayuntamiento was established, bringing a formal record-keeping process to the area.

The preservation of these early records has been a boon to researchers. San Augustine's rich history is preserved in its records, and is now available for public use.
